Monthly Round-up. February 2011

Well readers, there goes February! And what an unusually romantic month it was, with Valentine gifts arriving for the Lovestruck and Grumpy Mascots, and a kawaiified chocolate arriving for us all to enjoy! And let’s not forget the fantastic designers, crafters, and shops we met along the way, including Japu, ShouShou Shop, and Candy Tree Lane to name a few. And, as ever, there was also our monthly puzzle! Did you unscramble the mascot anagrams on the cleaning schedule?


It was: Mon… Sweet Mascot, Tue… Teddy Mascot, Wed… Demon Mascot, Thu… Metal Mascot, and Fri… Nerd Mascot. Amazing! Although who’d of thought the Sweet Mascot was an anagram of Sweat Comets? I can’t imagine she’ll like that much! Oh well, that’s all for this month, folks, but be sure to come back next month when we’ll have plenty more kawaii treats for you all to enjoy! So long!

Automatic Artworks!

Dear Mystic Mascot,

As an avid art lover there is nothing I enjoy more than learning about the tricks and techniques artists have used throughout the centuries to create their artworks. Recently a good friend of mine introduced me to the technique of automatic drawing, which was originally championed by the surrealists as a means to overcome self-censorship. The technique basically involves randomly letting rip with a pen or a paintbrush on some paper or canvas. Sounds like a laugh, I though, so I gave it a go…


Well, I’m sure you can imagine the surprise I got when, after scribbling away for an hour and a half on a piece of paper with no thought or foresight whatsoever, I was greeted by a drawing of none other than your own sweet self as a result! Granted, it probably isn’t the most flattering drawing you’re ever likely to see of yourself, but a drawing of you it is nonetheless! Now, I’m not suggesting there’s anything mystical or supernatural about this artwork, but you’ve got to admit… it is a bit weird, isn’t it?

Kawaii Treats from Candy Tree Lane

Woo hoo! Get ready for a treat readers! In fact, get ready for a triple treat! Yipee! Is everyone sitting comfortably? Cute Classics! The Mr. Men!

In the world of children’s books there have been many memorable characters. And today I’d like to tell you all about my own particular favourite. Or should that be favourites? Because the memorable characters I want to talk about are… the Mr. Men! I’m pretty sure most of you will already be familiar with the Mr. Men, as they are quite popular around the world, but for those of you that aren’t, here’s a little something from my own personal archive to introduce you to them…


Pretty cute, aren’t they? The Mr. Men started life as a series of books by Roger Hargreaves that were first published way back in 1971, and their enduring popularity with children started very shortly afterwards! For me it was always the simplicity of the characters and silliness of the stories that held the greatest appeal. It made me feel as if I could be a part of the Mr. Men world too - whether I was drawing the characters myself, or making up my own silly stories! And this childlike appeal, I’m pleased to report, continues to this day! In fact, the Mr. Men are so popular, they’ve even got their own website! How cool is that?

Annoying Anagrams! Ed Mascot!

Yippee folks, it’s puzzle time! And this month’s puzzle is an absolute corker! Even if I do say so myself! Which I do! Ha ha! But enough tomfoolery, it’s time to introduce the puzzle! As we all know our very own Ed Mascot reckons he’s something of a master blogger! Many others disagree, but that’s another story :) One thing we can all agree on however is that in life, things don’t always go to plan! Take a look at this…


Hmmm… it looks like our old friend the Ed Mascot is having a bit of trouble with his editing software, and can’t seem to print off the mascot names for this week’s KawaiiPunk cleaning schedule properly - yes, he really is that pedantically officious! But wait, it looks like all is not lost! For if I’m not mistaken, and I never am, the garbled names on the list are actually anagrams of the self same mascots! So the question is… can you work out the names of the five mascots on the list from their anagrams? As ever, the answer will be revealed in this month’s monthly round-up!

Marvellous Mayhem at Monster Zoo!

Aaaarrrgh! Hello again readers! It’s me, the Monster Mascot! Back again to bring you some marvellously monstrous mischief! Which, after all that Valentine’s Day nonsense you’ve had to put up with over the last week, I dare say you’re extremely pleased to hear! See? I told you they were fearsome! What you are looking at are just some of the residents of the Monster Zoo. Monster Zoo is a Zazzle shop that sells t-shirts, ties, bags, buttons, and lots, lots more besides, all of which are adorned with the crazy creature creations of an ingenious illustrator named Floog. But a word of warning folks - don’t, under any circumstances whatsoever, describe these monsters as cute! Not unless you want to see them go berserk that is! Mwah ha ha ha ha!

Kawaiification! Cheery Chocolate!

Dear Sir/Madam,

I thought I’d take this opportunity to wish yourself, your fellow mascots, and your wonderful readers a happy Valentine’s Day! Well, what with it being February 14th today, it did seem quite fitting! And to do so I decided to kawaiify a Valentine’s Day classic for you all to enjoy. Yes, you’ve guessed it, it’s a kawaiified chocolate…


I originally intended to kawaiify a flower but, on reflection, decided this would be too similar to one of my previous works. (Re. Kawaiification! Summer Joy!) And so, as someone who strongly believes in kawaiidiversity, I decided to go for a chocolate instead. I hope you all enjoy this latest work of kawaiification and, more importantly, have a happy Valentine’s Day too!

Sometimes in life we overlook things. Usually it’s just our keys or wallets, although sometimes it can be a bit more serious. Take this blog for example… it proudly claims to bring its readers the “best kawaii goodies the world has to offer” - a mission statement we mascots take very seriously! Yet, amazingly, this blog has managed to overlook a kawaii-tastic shop of super cute proportions! But don’t worry, because this oversight is about to be taken care of right now! Grumpy Garden Gift!

Dear Grumpy Mascot,

I noticed earlier this month that one of your readers sent the Lovestruck Mascot a Valentine’s gift. (Re. Choc Box Clever!) A very sweet idea indeed. However, I couldn’t help but think this gift was somewhat wasted on the Lovestruck Mascot. After all, surely she’s going to get enough Valentine gifts already! It’s a paper flower I created using your chronically grumpy face for petals. I thought it would be a good idea to create something for you, as I’m pretty sure you won’t be getting any Valentine gifts whatsoever on February 14th - on account of you being so miserable and all that! Dear Lovestruck Mascot,

As the most romantically minded of all the KawaiiPunk mascots I imagine you are very much looking forward to Valentine’s Day. And why wouldn’t you be? After all, who doesn’t like cards, flowers, perfume, and, of course, chocolates. Which got me thinking. While chocolates are indeed a very welcome Valentine’s gift, there is something slightly impersonal about them. And so, in an attempt to address this very issue, I created these for you…
