Monthly Round-up. July 2010

written by Ed Mascot

Well readers, there goes another month! It was called July, although I’m sure most of you already knew that :) And what a fun month it was, right? I mean… we got to see a kawaiified football, helped out a girl with her holiday blues, and even got to see some prototype novelty goods, twice! And along the way we meet AAITSKI!, Moshi Moshi Kawaii, and I Look Pretty to name but a few. And, don’t worry, I haven’t forgot about our monthly puzzle. Did you spot the correct photo?

Did you spot the correct Money Mascot photo?
Astounding! It was D! Who’d of thought it was possible? Well... pretty much anyone that looked at it really! Anyway, be sure to come back next month readers when we’ll have plenty more kawaii treats and goodies for you, including another great puzzle! And… there’s even a rumour going around that we’re going to have some very special papercrafts! Can it possibly be true? There’s only one way to find out!

See you all in August.
Your host with the most,
Ed Mascot :)

Lucky 7 Spanner Set!

Readers' Art

Dear Lucky 7 Mascot,

After the disappointing response to my last invention (Re. Hoopla Minotaur Mascot!) I thought I’d have another go at creating a novelty product for you KawaiiPunk mascots. After all, I didn’t get where I am today by giving up on the first go! And so, for your consideration, not to mention the undoubted viewing pleasure of your readers, I have crated this masterpiece…

Lucky 7 Mascot Spanner Set!
It’s the Lucky 7 Mascot Spanner Set. Stunning, isn’t it? I got the idea for it while staring in disbelief at your bizarrely shaped head - excuse my frankness! And, as before, I’m prepared to offer you a seat at the table for the undoubted riches that this product is sure to reap! And the cost to you for getting this project off the ground? A meagre $3.47 million! Cheap at half the price!

Tempted?
Prof. Waldo P Wilkinson. Aged 105.
(It was my birthday last week, in case you’re wondering!)

Lucky 7 Mascot replies...

Sorry Waldo, but I’m afraid the only thing I’m going to offer you is belated birthday wishes! Although I have to admit, I do admire your tenacity!

Better luck next time,
Lucky 7 Mascot :)

Awesome Art from Thickblackoutline!

written by Awestruck Mascot

Being a relative newcomer to the ever-growing family of mascots here, I did worry I wouldn’t be able to contribute anything new to this long running kawaii blog. After all, it has been running for over a year now - although the Ed Mascot assures me it feels like a lot longer :) Amazingly however I was wrong. And, even more amazingly, it turned out that one of my all time favourite artists had yet to be featured! So get ready for a treat readers, because today we’re going to be meeting a bona fide kawaii master…

Thickblackoutline at RedBubble
Yes, unbelievable but true! It seems that this so called kawaii blog has managed to run for a whole year without mentioning the amazing work of thickblackoutline! Thickblackoutline is a graphic designer and illustrator who creates astounding vector artworks with a strong oriental influence, and her RedBubble shop is just the place to go and see them. And, thankfully for you, it’s also the place to go if you feel like picking up a thickblackoutline t-shirt! And, after seeing all these great designs, I’m guessing you probably will!

Always awestruck,
Awestruck Mascot :)

Idle Idol. The Japanese Mascot Book!

written by Ed Mascot

Believe it or not the life of a kawaii mascot can sometimes seem like a hard and thankless task. Don’t worry, I’m not about to start wallowing in self pity. Athough… having to put up with some of the mascots around here can seem like a bit of chore sometimes :) Still… at least I’m warm, comfortable, and, above all else, indoors. A luxury that not all kawaii mascots can boast of. Like these guys for instance…

Idle Idol. The Japanese Mascot Book!
See what I mean? It’s a little known fact that a lot of kawaii mascots spend most of their time outdoors, come rain or shine! But now, thanks to Edward and John Harrison, these mascots are getting the credit they deserve in a new book called Idle Idol. The book celebrates all kinds of kawaii mascots, and explores the long standing relationship between Japanese culture and all things cute. A perfect gift for fans of kawaii everywhere! Not that I’m dropping hints or anything :)

Always keeping it kawaii,
Ed Mascot :)

Passport Problems! Money Mascot!

written by Puzzle Mascot

Hurrah! It’s that time of the month again readers - it’s puzzle time! And what a puzzle I’ve got for you this month! You see, every year around this time the Money Mascot likes to spend some of his hard earned cash on nice refreshing holiday. I’m sure many of you do too :) But unfortunately this year he’s had to renew his passport! “So? What’s the problem?” I hear you say! Well, take a look at this…

Can you spot the correct photo?
Catastrophe! It looks like the photo booth machine has messed up the Money Mascot’s passport photos! What a disaster! Or is it? I think I can spot one photo of the Money Mascot that looks OK! In fact, I’m sure I can! The question is… can you work out which photo is a true likeness of the Money Mascot? Well, can you? The answer, as ever, will be revealed in this month’s monthly round-up!

Happy scrutinising,
Puzzle Mascot :)

Hoopla Minotaur Mascot!

Readers' Art

Dear Minotaur Mascot,

I’m an keen amatuer inventor who specialises in the creation and development of novelty products. Recently, while trying to find the next big thing for my latest project, I found myself directed to this blog by a popular search engine - I know, I’ve no idea why it sent me here either! Anyway, after getting over my initial disappoint, I noticed you like to encourage your readers to send in their art, and thought I might as well have a go. And so, putting all my professional expertise into action, I created this…

Minotaur Mascot Hoopla Game!
It’s a Minotaur Mascot Hoopla Game! I know, it is genius, isn’t it? And what’s more, I reckon it might actually be a seller! After all, what kid doesn’t play hoopla, right? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this invention and, if you’re interested in taking it further, I reckon I could put a working prototype together for a mere $1.5 million!

Whaddya think?
Prof. Waldo P Wilkinson. Aged 104.

Minotaur Mascot replies...

Wow! Just when I thought this blog had seen it all, along comes Waldo to reset the bar for everyone! $1.5 million? One word, sir - PASS! Although I do like the picture :)

Thanks, but no thanks,
Minotaur Mascot :)

Holiday Blues!

Ask a Mascot

Dear Tantrum Mascot,

As someone who seems to be pretty adept at getting their own way, I thought you might be able to help with a problem I’m having. You see… next week I’ll be going on holiday with my dad and my seven brothers - and no, that isn’t typo! It isn’t that I don’t like my dad and my brothers but, being the only girl in the family, it does mean I am constantly outnumbered and outvoted when it comes to choosing holiday activities. And, even though they all seem to enjoy it, I find the prospect of spending the next six weeks hill walking, camping, and white water rafting an absolute drag! I’d much prefer shopping, sightseeing, and sunbathing any day of week! After all, aren’t holidays supposed to be about relaxing? Anyway, I was hoping you could give me some handy tips for getting my own way. For once!

Yours hopefully,
Sarah Perkins.

Tantrum Mascot replies...

Fear not Sarah! If there’s one thing I know all about, it’s how to get what you want! And, luckily for you, I’d be more than happy to share my expertise. So… here’s my top 5 tips for getting your own way…

1. Asking! As the old adage goes… “If you don’t ask, you don’t get!” Sometimes the key to getting what you want is to simply be upfront about it. Although most of the time, it isn’t!

2. Reverse psychology! Make your target do what you want by suggesting they won’t do it! A very powerful technique, but perhaps you shouldn’t use it! (Did you see what I did there?)

3. Persistent moaning! Never underestimate the power of a good moan! Be relentless and consistent, and eventually your target will crack! That’s how I got my pet goldfish! Result!

4. Truth bending! a.k.a. lying! Your dad and your brothers can’t go white water rafting if the road to the river is closed. What? They didn’t hear about the avalanche? It was all over the news! Hee-hee-hee!

5. The full on tantrum! If all else fails then it’s time bring out the big guns! Choose a public place with plenty of onlookers and just let rip! Shout, scream, cry, kick, and punch until you’re blue in the face! Highly effective, and great fun too :)

So there you go Sarah, my top 5 tips for getting your own way. And don’t be put off using number 5 by thinking you’re too old for it. This woman wasn’t, and she’s a mum and everything…

See? Living proof that you’re never too old for a good old fashioned tantrum! And, as I’m sure you noticed, it also got her the result she was looking for! Just as it will for you! Well… as long as your dad and your brothers don’t read this too!

Happy holidays,
Tantrum Mascot :)

Kawaiification! Football Fun!

Readers' Emails

Dear Sir/Madam,

With the 2010 World Cup final just days away, I thought now would be a good time to present to you another work of kawaiification. After all, it only happens once every four years - a fact my wife is extremely thankful for! And, doubtlessly, many of your readers are too! But, while fully acknowledging these sentiments, I still think this glorious sporting occasion is worthy of a kawaii makeover. And so I have created this…

It's a kawaiified football!
Yes, you’ve guessed it! It is a kawaiified football! What better way to mark this fantastic tournament than to put a happy little face on a football! Just perfect! And with the summer sun now well and truly upon us, I eagerly look forward to a happy and prosperous few months of further kawaiified joy. Of which, needless to say, I fully intend to share the results with you and your wonderful readers.

They’re called Walker Books, and for the past 30 years they’ve specialised in publishing innovative and exciting children’s books. And we all know what that means, right? It follows the adventures of Strawberry Moshi as she searches for her elusive sweetheart, Super Moshi. And what a search it is! You’ll have to keep your eyes peeled and wits about you as you help Strawberry Moshi on her quest - travelling through the Mushroom Forest, swimming through the Mermaid Moshi Sea, and even navigating the yummy sounding Delicious-Land! How cute is that? But wait! Didn’t I promise you two books?

Where is Strawberry Princess Moshi?
Of course I did, and here it is! It’s the equally cute and fun Where is Strawberry Princess Moshi? In this book you’ll help Strawberry Moshi become Strawberry Princess Moshi by helping her and her friends find their way to the grand ball being held at Crown Prince Moshi’s castle. And, once again, you’ll have to keep your eyes wide open to do so! So do you think you’re up to this super kawaii challenge? Then why not head on over to Walker Books and give it a try?

Horoscopes for July 2010

written by Mystic Mascot

Ahhhh… the mists clear and the spirits join us once again. What wonders will they bring to us this month? Will they bring joy? Or will they bring woe? Or will they bring some third option that I can’t quite think of at the moment? There’s only one way to find out. Read on, if you dare…

Aries Mar 21 - Apr 20
Luck is heading your way thick and fast this month! Although unfortunately most of it is going to be of the bad variety! Sorry!
Lucky star sign: Capricorn

Taurus Apr 21 - May 21
An unfortunate overheard conversation has the potential to cause you great embarrassment this month. So just make sure you really have hung up before you start it!
Lucky star sign: Virgo

Gemini May 22 - Jun 22
Making a whole outfit out of an old pair of curtains may indeed be a good way of beating the credit crunch. But is it really suitable attire for a wedding? Think on!
Lucky star sign: Pisces

Cancer Jun 23 - Jul 23
Reading your horoscopes will be a complete and utter waste of time this month. Still… at least now you’ll know not to bother!
Lucky star sign: Aquarius

Leo Jul 24 - Aug 23
A once familiar friend will make a welcome reappearance on July 12th. It’ll be called a normal TV schedule! Hurrah - no more World Cup!
Lucky star sign: Scorpio

Virgo Aug 24 - Sep 23
A faked moment of forgetfulness could lead to a memorable moment this month. Just be sure you remember to forget to remember at the right moment. Otherwise, forget it!
Lucky star sign: Sagittarius

Libra Sep 24 - Oct 23
You’re right. Buying in bulk is a good way to save money. But there are limits! And besides, do you really need 16 lawnmowers? I’m just saying!
Lucky star sign: Taurus

Scorpio Oct 24 - Nov 22
Avoiding reading stuff whot has been wrote all bad, ands got bad spellin and fings is whots going to get you thru this month unscaved. Wooops!
Lucky star sign: Aires

Sagittarius Nov 23 - Dec 21
A hat is a good idea when trying to protect yourself from the sun. A ski mask on the other hand… not so much! Remember this when attending that school fete!
Lucky star sign: Libra

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 20
A spur of the moment suggestion for a fun day out has the potential to end in severe disappointment. Best pretend you’ve got a headache and avoid the whole thing!
Lucky star sign: Leo

Aquarius Jan 21 - Feb 19
It’s big, it’s gray, it’s got four legs, and a trunk. Avoid thinking about this animal and you should get through this month just fine! What? I tried to warn you!
Lucky star sign: Cancer

Pisces Feb 20 - Mar 20
Good news! That wish you made as 7 year old is about to come true! Bad news! Never brushing your teeth again isn’t quite as good as you imagined!
Lucky star sign: Gemini

Ahhhh… the mists return, and the spirits leave. But did they bring you what you wanted? They didn’t? Oh well! Whaddya gonna do? Until we meet again,
Mystic Mascot :)
