Monthly Round-up. July 2010

Well readers, there goes another month! It was called July, although I’m sure most of you already knew that :) And what a fun month it was, right? I mean… we got to see a kawaiified football, helped out a girl with her holiday blues, and even got to see some prototype novelty goods, twice! And along the way we meet AAITSKI!, Moshi Moshi Kawaii, and I Look Pretty to name but a few. And, don’t worry, I haven’t forgot about our monthly puzzle. Did you spot the correct photo?


Astounding! It was D! Who’d of thought it was possible? Well... pretty much anyone that looked at it really! Anyway, be sure to come back next month readers when we’ll have plenty more kawaii treats and goodies for you, including another great puzzle! And… there’s even a rumour going around that we’re going to have some very special papercrafts! Can it possibly be true? There’s only one way to find out!

Lucky 7 Spanner Set!

Dear Lucky 7 Mascot,

After the disappointing response to my last invention (Re. Hoopla Minotaur Mascot!) I thought I’d have another go at creating a novelty product for you KawaiiPunk mascots. After all, I didn’t get where I am today by giving up on the first go! And so, for your consideration, not to mention the undoubted viewing pleasure of your readers, I have crated this masterpiece…


It’s the Lucky 7 Mascot Spanner Set. Stunning, isn’t it? I got the idea for it while staring in disbelief at your bizarrely shaped head - excuse my frankness! And, as before, I’m prepared to offer you a seat at the table for the undoubted riches that this product is sure to reap! And the cost to you for getting this project off the ground? A meagre $3.47 million! Cheap at half the price!

Awesome Art from Thickblackoutline!

Being a relative newcomer to the ever-growing family of mascots here, I did worry I wouldn’t be able to contribute anything new to this long running kawaii blog. After all, it has been running for over a year now - although the Ed Mascot assures me it feels like a lot longer :) Amazingly however I was wrong. And, even more amazingly, it turned out that one of my all time favourite artists had yet to be featured! So get ready for a treat readers, because today we’re going to be meeting a bona fide kawaii master…


Yes, unbelievable but true! It seems that this so called kawaii blog has managed to run for a whole year without mentioning the amazing work of thickblackoutline! Thickblackoutline is a graphic designer and illustrator who creates astounding vector artworks with a strong oriental influence, and her RedBubble shop is just the place to go and see them. And, thankfully for you, it’s also the place to go if you feel like picking up a thickblackoutline t-shirt! And, after seeing all these great designs, I’m guessing you probably will!

Idle Idol. The Japanese Mascot Book!

Believe it or not the life of a kawaii mascot can sometimes seem like a hard and thankless task. Don’t worry, I’m not about to start wallowing in self pity. Athough… having to put up with some of the mascots around here can seem like a bit of chore sometimes :) Still… at least I’m warm, comfortable, and, above all else, indoors. A luxury that not all kawaii mascots can boast of. Like these guys for instance…


See what I mean? It’s a little known fact that a lot of kawaii mascots spend most of their time outdoors, come rain or shine! But now, thanks to Edward and John Harrison, these mascots are getting the credit they deserve in a new book called Idle Idol. The book celebrates all kinds of kawaii mascots, and explores the long standing relationship between Japanese culture and all things cute. A perfect gift for fans of kawaii everywhere! Not that I’m dropping hints or anything :)

Passport Problems! Money Mascot!

Hurrah! It’s that time of the month again readers - it’s puzzle time! And what a puzzle I’ve got for you this month! You see, every year around this time the Money Mascot likes to spend some of his hard earned cash on nice refreshing holiday. I’m sure many of you do too :) But unfortunately this year he’s had to renew his passport! “So? What’s the problem?” I hear you say! Well, take a look at this…

As a mascot for dolls, I like to think I know a thing or two about prettiness. After all, us dolls are quite widely known for being pretty :) Just look at Sindy, or Blythe, or Little Miss No Name. Dear Minotaur Mascot,

I’m an keen amatuer inventor who specialises in the creation and development of novelty products. Recently, while trying to find the next big thing for my latest project, I found myself directed to this blog by a popular search engine - I know, I’ve no idea why it sent me here either! Anyway, after getting over my initial disappoint, I noticed you like to encourage your readers to send in their art, and thought I might as well have a go. And so, putting all my professional expertise into action, I created this…


It’s a Minotaur Mascot Hoopla Game! I know, it is genius, isn’t it? And what’s more, I reckon it might actually be a seller! After all, what kid doesn’t play hoopla, right? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this invention and, if you’re interested in taking it further, I reckon I could put a working prototype together for a mere $1.5 million!

Holiday Blues!

Dear Tantrum Mascot,

As someone who seems to be pretty adept at getting their own way, I thought you might be able to help with a problem I’m having. You see… next week I’ll be going on holiday with my dad and my seven brothers - and no, that isn’t typo! It isn’t that I don’t like my dad and my brothers but, being the only girl in the family, it does mean I am constantly outnumbered and outvoted when it comes to choosing holiday activities. And, even though they all seem to enjoy it, I find the prospect of spending the next six weeks hill walking, camping, and white water rafting an absolute drag! I’d much prefer shopping, sightseeing, and sunbathing any day of week! After all, aren’t holidays supposed to be about relaxing? Anyway, I was hoping you could give me some handy tips for getting my own way. For once!

Fear not Sarah! If there’s one thing I know all about, it’s how to get what you want! And, luckily for you, I’d be more than happy to share my expertise. So… here’s my top 5 tips for getting your own way…

1. Asking! As the old adage goes… “If you don’t ask, you don’t get!” Sometimes the key to getting what you want is to simply be upfront about it. Although most of the time, it isn’t!

2. Reverse psychology! Make your target do what you want by suggesting they won’t do it! A very powerful technique, but perhaps you shouldn’t use it! (Did you see what I did there?)

3. Persistent moaning! Never underestimate the power of a good moan! Be relentless and consistent, and eventually your target will crack! That’s how I got my pet goldfish! Result!

4. Truth bending! a.k.a. lying! Your dad and your brothers can’t go white water rafting if the road to the river is closed. What? They didn’t hear about the avalanche? It was all over the news! Hee-hee-hee!

5. The full on tantrum! If all else fails then it’s time bring out the big guns! Choose a public place with plenty of onlookers and just let rip! Shout, scream, cry, kick, and punch until you’re blue in the face! Highly effective, and great fun too :)

So there you go Sarah, my top 5 tips for getting your own way. And don’t be put off using number 5 by thinking you’re too old for it. This woman wasn’t, and she’s a mum and everything…

See? Living proof that you’re never too old for a good old fashioned tantrum! And, as I’m sure you noticed, it also got her the result she was looking for! Just as it will for you! Well… as long as your dad and your brothers don’t read this too!

Kawaiification! Football Fun!

Dear Sir/Madam,

With the 2010 World Cup final just days away, I thought now would be a good time to present to you another work of kawaiification. After all, it only happens once every four years - a fact my wife is extremely thankful for! And, doubtlessly, many of your readers are too! But, while fully acknowledging these sentiments, I still think this glorious sporting occasion is worthy of a kawaii makeover. And so I have created this…
