Well folks, I guess that’s the end of January! And what a kawaii packed month it was! Not to mention a snow and cold filled one! Still… at least we got to keep warm in the company of Evadelia, Melon1, Creamous, Christa de Groot, and MigotoChou to name but a few. We even got some top parenting advice from the Senior Mascot! And let’s not forget our monthly puzzle - did you work out who gave Unlucky 13 his camera?
Unbelievable! It was the Money Mascot! Who’d of thought that penny pincher would have shelled out on such an extravagant gift! Well, that’s all for now folks, but be sure to come back next month when we’ll have plenty more kawaii crafts and treats for your hungry little bellies. And who knows… with Valentine’s Day approaching we might even have some romance for you too!
See you all in February. Your host with the most, Ed Mascot :)
We all know life can get pretty hectic. And sometimes the things we planned to do can get overlooked and left by the wayside as we rush on with our busy lives. Of course the Sleepy Mascot doesn’t have this problem, but that’s another story! Anyway… it seems that the KawaiiPunk Blog is not immune to this irksome condition, and a major omission has been spotted in its list of kawaii shops. One that I now fully intend to rectify! Ladies and gentlemen, I give you The Cute Institute…
Yes folks, unbelievably it seems that The Cute Institute, one of our favourite kawaii shops of all time, has yet to receive a single mention in this ‘so called’ kawaii blog! Rest assured a full inquiry is underway to unearth the Mascot responsible for this heinous act, and they can expect to receive my full wrath for their bumbling actions! In the meantime why don’t you pop on over and check out The Cute Institute’s Zazzle store and its fantastic collection of kawaii tshirts, cards, buttons, badges and more. I’m off to get my wrath on!
I’m a big fan of detective shows - Franklyn and the Moth, CSI Falkirk, Jambo and the Crumb, Big Leg… I could go on, but I’m sure you get the picture. Anyway, one of my favourite things in these shows is when the sketch artist draws a picture of an aged suspect. You know… they take a picture of someone young and make them look old! Well, with the arrival of the Senior Mascot at KawaiiPunk, this gave me an idea…
Ta da! With my encyclopaedic knowledge of the detective genre and my artistic know how I created this for you. It’s an artist’s, and I use that term in its widest possible sense, impression of what you will look like when you’re old. Basically you’re going to get all wrinkly and grow a moustache, because that’s what old people do! Pretty cool, isn’t it?
It’s often said that the greatest pleasures in life are the simplest ones. Those beautiful moments when, by design or by chance, everything just seems to come together in perfect harmony. A sunset after a picnic, a robin landing on a cherry tree, or thinking up a blog post opening that you haven’t used before :) Recently I had one of those rare moments, and today I’d like to share it with you…
This is MigotoChou. MigotoChou is an Etsy shop I chanced upon that has some of the sweetest creations I’ve ever seen. Packed with beautifully crafted and unique jewellery, accessories and trinkets MigotoChou is definitely one of those glorious moments that we all hope for. And now, thanks to good old serendipity, and the internet, we can all have it!
As a fan of all things television related, not to mention avid connoisseur of cuteness, I was very excited to hear that CafePress had teamed up with ABC TV to let its members create their own t-shirt designs for the hit TV show LOST. No surprise there I hear you say, and you’re right. Unfortunately however, it turned out I wasn’t the only one around here to get excited - the guy behind the KawaiiPunk Blog got pretty excited too! In fact he got so excited he temporarily abandoned his KawaiiPunk duties and spent the whole week doing this instead…
Can you believe it? While me and my fellow mascots have been left to fend for ourselves, our resident graphic designer has been busy making up incredibly cute t-shirts to celebrate the upcoming final season of LOST! What a cheek! And as if designing an adorable Oceanic Airlines Stewardess t-shirt wasn’t enough, he then went on to do this…
Unbelievable! It’s another cute LOST t-shirt - this time an Oceanic Airlines Luggage design! I mean really! One cute t-shirt is forgivable, but this? And… just when I thought his excessive moonlighting had come to an end, he then had the brass neck to get me to write this piece about the whole treacherous affair! If you ask me I’d say the Money Mascot would have been a far more appropriate choice for such a blatant piece of self promotion! Still… I suppose the designs are quite cute :)
Hello everyone! Ready for another puzzle? Good! Then we’ll begin. This month’s kawaii conundrum involves everyone’s favourite accident waiting to happen… yes folks, it’s the Unlucky 13 Mascot! Our story begins a mere month ago with the arrival of a strange package for our mascot of misfortune. Actually it was just a Christmas present, but that doesn’t sound very dramatic! Anyway, it turned out it was a camera and Unlucky 13 thought he would mark this uncharacteristically fortunate moment by taking a picture of the Mascot that gave it to him. Can you guess what happened next?
Yep, the camera may have boasted of its point and click capabilities but, as we all know, things seldom go to plan where the Unlucky 13 Mascot is concerned. Talk about blurred vision! The question is… who is the generous Mascot that Unlucky 13 was trying to photograph? The answer, as ever, will be revealed in this month’s monthly round-up!
Please, please, please help me! I’m an 8 year old boy with a big problem - two big problems actually! They’re called mum and dad! Don’t get me wrong, I love them and all, but they just won’t let me do anything fun for fear of it being dangerous - and believe me, these couple of jokers see danger everywhere! I’ve spoken to my friends about it, on one of the rare occasions I was allowed to play outside without my SWAT team escort and GPS tracker, and they’ve said they’re all in the same boat! It seems parents everywhere are obsessed with keeping their kids ‘safe’ by keeping us locked up indoors 24/7. It’s driving me mad! I’ll be 9 next month and I haven’t even had my first black eye yet, let alone a concussion or broken bone! As a proud member of the older generation I though you might be able to talk some sense into these misguided fools of parents we have these days and extol the virtues of an adventurous and risk filled childhood!
Thanking you in advance, Mark Masterson.
Young man, I would be happy to help. For too long now this once proud nation has stood idly by as the adventurous needs of its children have been abandoned to satisfy the self righteous wants of their parents. Well… that stops right here! My childhood was filled with all manner of bumps, scrapes, bruises and breaks and I turned out just fine. I’ve even got a moustache and everything! So here’s my top 5 reasons why adventurous outdoor childhoods are the only ones worth having…
1. Education! To become a well rounded, upstanding, productive member of society a child needs a balanced education. Falling down a hill will teach them the importance of this balance - in more ways than one!
2. Environment! Resources are finite folks, and using a TV, games console, or computer as a babysitter isn’t helping! With the exception of reading this blog, obviously :)
3. Percentages! 99.9999999% of the world we live in is situated outdoors. 0.0000001% is indoors. As the yanks are so fond of saying - you do the math!
4. Health! Inactivity is a major contributor to obesity. And being a Level 100 Knight Mage Warlock is hardly a fitting trade off! Not if you want to get a girlfriend anyway!
5. Fun! Above all else children need to have fun, and what could be more fun than a nice spot of tree climbing followed by a leisurely trip to casualty! Ahhh… the joys of youth!
So Mark, there you go. And if any parents reading this would like further information about how to stop making their child’s life a misery, take a look at this for a perfect gift idea that doesn’t involve a spirit crushing LCD screen…
Marvelous! And didn’t little Snubby look just swell in his suit and tie! Although I wouldn’t mind having a word with his parents about their child naming decisions! I mean seriously, Snubby? What would they have named a girl? Peaches Honeyblossom? Simply ludicrous!
Proving there’s still life in the old dog, Senior Mascot :)
With a name like the Freak Mascot it will probably come as no surprise to you that I am a fan of all things odd. And today I’m going to introduce you all to one of my favourite oddities - Christa de Groot. I realise this is an unusual way to introduce a designer, and some of you may even accuse me rudeness, but I assure you my respect is of the highest order. After all, isn’t odd just another word for unique?
Christa de Groot is a graphic designer and illustrator whose creations have won legions of fans the world over. Hailing from the Netherlands Christa has developed a unique style of cute that is instantly recognisable - the mark of a true artist if ever there was one! With the use of simple geometric shapes and bold colours Christa has managed to carve out a kawaii style that is truly its own! Odd and cute in beautiful equal measures!
After my last correspondence (Re. A Gallery of Geeks!) I thought I would continue my trawl through the archives to see if I could uncover any further embarrassing photos of your kawaii colleagues. I was hoping to find a picture of Sweet wearing a bobble hat, or perhaps a snapshot of Punk sporting some flares. What I was not expecting to find was this…
Who, in the name of all that is kawaii, are these two oddballs supposed to be? And why, in the name of all that is cute, is there no mention of them whatsoever in any of the KawaiiPunk websites or shops? Are they an elaborate prank orchestrated by that pesky Mischief Mascot? Are they a couple of rogue mascots who’ve chosen to go solo? Or are they kawaii ghosts intent on who knows what? I simply must know the answer!
Yours hopelessly helplessly, Buddy Rockford
Well Buddy, I suppose the truth had to come out some time. And, in a way, I guess I should thank you for forcing my hand. Those are the Tiger and Mermaid Mascots, and they were sacked during the 2009 makeover for… well… just not being very good basically! Still, it does make you wonder how the Unlucky 13 Mascot made the cut :)
At the KawaiiPunk Blog, as I’m sure you already know, we always like to hear from our readers about the latest kawaii toys and goodies. Letters about the Ed Mascot looking like a geek go down well too, but that’s another story :) Recently we were contacted by a reader who directed us to a truly unique creation that, unbelievably, had managed to slip by our kawaii radar undetected. It goes by the name of Creamous…
Neat, isn’t it? Creamous is the next step in cute collectables, not to mention a tour de force in handmade handicrafts - a kawaii connoisseurs dream if ever there was one! It’s coolly crafted characters, or Littles, to give them their proper name, are among the finest examples of collectable toys around today, and would be a welcome addition to any mantelpiece! But don’t just take my word for it - head on over and have a look for yourselves! Believe me, you won’t regret it!
Back in November, before I arrived at KawaiiPunk, you may remember my esteemed colleague the Cubist Mascot introducing you to an amazing artist by the name of Rudy Fig. (Re. Rudy Fig. Big Eyes Are Back!) Well today I’d like to introduce her to you all over again. This time not as an artist, but as a creator of glorious custom dolls! Well… what did you expect? I am the Doll Mascot after all :) Introducing Blythe a la Rudy Fig…
Très bien! The resurgence and popularity of the Blythe doll in recent years has been matched only by the creativity and imagination of her collectors. And among the most imaginatively creative has to stand our friend Rudy Fig. As with her glorious paintings, Rudy has managed to imbue her custom Blythes with a sense of strange wonder and fairytale enchantment. As if Alice had not only gone through the looking glass, but stepped clean off the page as she did! Truly beautiful!
Always happiest out of the box, Doll Mascot :)
P.S. If you’re a creator of cute custom dolls, and would like to show your work on the KawaiiPunk Blog, then please get in touch :)
Well readers, it’s happened again! With the New Year barely out of its box, I could hardly believe it myself, but it’s true. Yes folks, I’m in love! Again! Well… I guess some of us girls are just luckier than others :) But, more importantly, who is the lucky recipient of my affections this time I hear you ask. Well, let me tell you…
It’s the truly adorable Etsy shop called Melon1. Isn’t it gorgeous? At Melon1 you can buy some of the cutest plushies, clothing and accessories that a girl can dream of. And dream of them you will! Because from the moment you first set eyes on this glorious shop, you’ll know that it is truly the one - the Melon1 that is! Ahhh… beautiful Melon1, if only all the handmade treasures could be like you!
I’ve been reading this blog for some time now and must say I find it extremely mediocre. There. I said it! I do however greatly enjoy your Readers’ Emails section, even though I’m pretty sure most of the emails are just made up - even this one :) Anyway, I’ve noticed in a lot of posts that the other mascots often refer to you as looking like a geek. I think this unfair, as you’re clearly much more of nerd! Anyway, again, to cheer you up a bit I thought I’d send you this…
Yes, while trawling the internet I happened to come across some early photographs of your esteemed colleagues… and talk about the pot calling the kettle black! Wow! I’ve never seen such a staggering collection of geeks in one place, and I run a comic shop! So the next time one of your fellow mascots makes a funny about your geeky appearance, I thought you could show them this and watch them choke on some sweet humble pie!
Yours helpfully hopefully, Buddy Rockford
Thanks Buddy, I’m sure that picture will come in very handy, and it’s always to nice to hear from a satisfied reader of our mediocre blog, although I’ve no idea what you mean about made up emails :)
They say the luckiest person on earth is the person that gets paid to do what they love, and for me that love is fashion. Yes, there’s nothing I enjoy more that spotting new trends and finding sweet styles! And if I could only work out how to get paid for it, I’d be laughing! Only joking! Sharing these treasures with you is more than enough reward for me. So here goes…
This, my fine followers of fashion, is the amazingly sweet work of a very talented designer called Evadelia. Her colourfully cute work can be found at RedBubble and is just the ticket for shifting those cold January blues. Bunnies, skunks, frogs, birdies, and even monsters can all be found in her fantastic store, and are guaranteed to put a smile on anyone’s face. Even the Grumpy Mascot :) Enjoy!
