Monthly Round-up. October 2009

written by Ed Mascot

Well folks, there goes October. And what a scary, spooky and monster filled month it was! A month that introduced us to Horror Top Trumps, a scary Sweet Mascot, and even a creepy Cute Mascot! Along the way we got to see some fantastic designing and crafting from Dino Eat Pooter, Riley McD, Borked Planet, OMG! Lia? and many more besides. And let’s not forget the Zombie Mascot’s Halloween puzzle. Did you work out which Mascots donated which body parts?

Did you match the Mascot donors?
Fantastic! It was the Disco Mascot (right hand), Muscle Mascot (left hand), Lovestruck Mascot (body), TV Mascot (right leg), and the Stereo Mascot (left leg). Wow! Isn’t medical science just fascinating? Be sure to come back next month for more kawaii crafts, goodies, puzzles and more!

See you all in November.
Happy Halloween,
Ed Mascot :)

Smonsters at Shandy Sparks!

written by Monster Mascot

Aaaarrrgh! Hello again! As a terrifyingly hideous monster I’m used to people running for the hills at the first sight of my fearsome phizog - not much fun when you’re just trying to buy an ice cream, I can tell you! But of course not all monsters are quite as scary as myself. In fact, believe it or not, some are actually quite cute…

Shandy Sparks at Etsy
See? I told you so. These cute little creatures, or Smonsters, to give them their proper name, can be found at the fantastic Shandy Sparks Etsy store. And, not only can they buy ice cream whenever they want, they also do a pretty good job of keeping scarier monsters away! Specialising in ‘under-the-bed-lurking beastie removal’ and ‘closet-creeping goblin whomping’ these guys are just the ticket for anyone looking for a fun and friendly monster to keep them company. And… you can even request them in you favourite colours too! How cool is that?

Making monsters merrier,
Monster Mascot :)

Cute and Creepy!

Readers' Art

Dear Cute Mascot,

After my last correspondence (Re. Sweet and Scary!) I thought the Ed Mascot may have seen the light and refocused this blog on its original intention - kawaii! Clearly I was wrong! Not only have your fellow monstrous mascots continued to overrun this blog with their self indulgent and gruesome celebration of Halloween, but the Ghost Mascot even went as far as to dedicate a whole post to Horror Top Trumps - where is the kawaii in that? And as if that wasn’t enough, he then proceeded to describe the Littlest Pet Shop as ‘cute and adorable and all that other boring girly stuff!’ Well enough is enough! When I read this decidedly average blog I want kawaii, and I’m sure that you do too! So here goes…

Ghost Cute Mascot!
There! It’s a picture of your fine self as a gruesome ghoul, and looking mighty cute too, even if I do say so myself! Take that Ghost, Zombie, Mummy, Monster and Demon Mascots! Cute rules and kawaii is forever!

Always flying the kawaii flag,
Vanessa Thompson. Aged 26.

Cute Mascot replies...

Thanks Vanessa, it’s always nice to hear from a kawaii fan. Although to be honest, I actually quite like Halloween! I even think the Monster Mascot is pretty cute, but don’t tell him I said so :)

Happy Halloween,
Cute Mascot :)

Edzemo. Monster Mayhem!

written by Demon Mascot

With only five days left until Halloween I’m sure a lot of you will be busy planning your outfits and costumes for the upcoming celebrations. After all, what’s the point of having Halloween if you don’t get dressed up to enjoy it? Which got me thinking… if dressing up in ghoulish garb is so much fun, why should we restrict ourselves to doing it only once a year? Why don’t we do it all the time?

Edzemo at RedBubble
Welcome to the cute, cool and creepy world of Edzemo. The Edzemo RedBubble shop is living proof that monsters aren’t just for Halloween. Its colourful selection of Rainbow Monsters, Crazy Bears and Wild Monkeys are the perfect combination of slick styles and sartorial spookiness! Just the thing for people who like their pumpkins all the year round, if you know what I mean!

Making everyday Halloween,
Demon Mascot :)

Donor Dilemma! Zombie Mascot!

written by Puzzle Mascot

OK readers, time for another puzzle, and this one’s not only tricky, it’s treaty too! Ha-ha! Yes, it’s a Halloween puzzle! As we all know Halloween is a time for great excitement among many of us and none more so than our very own Zombie Mascot! Unfortunately this year he seems to have got a bit over excited and has been running around so much that his arms, legs and body have fallen off - a none too uncommon problem for zombies :) Thankfully some of the other mascots have kindly helped him out by lending a hand, two hands actually, and a couple of feet, and a body!

Can you identify the donors?
Naturally the Zombie Mascot is very grateful for his colleague’s friendly gestures, and wants to thank them all in person for their donations. Unfortunately, due to his continued excitement about Halloween, he can’t remember which mascot gave him which body part! What a disaster! Can you help the Zombie Mascot work out which of his buddies donated which body part? The answer will be revealed in this month’s monthly round-up!

Happy puzzling,
Puzzle Mascot :)

Borked Planet! Creature Creations!

written by Mummy Mascot

As an incredibly well liked and popular monster I always find that Halloween is my busiest time of year. Every time it rolls around I find myself inundated with gifts and goodies from well wishers the world over. I’m sure you’re just the same :) Anyway… each year I end up with the same dilemma - where do I store my loot? My tomb? My sarcophagus? My offshore safety deposit box? Choices, choices, choices! Luckily this year I’ve managed to find the perfect solution to this annual conundrum, and here it is…

Borked Planet at Etsy
It’s called Borked Planet. Borked Planet is a fantastic Etsy shop that specialises in crafty creature creations. It’s got robot patches, ghostly greeting cards, zombie paintings and, most importantly, it’s got monster boxes to keep all these cutely creepy crafts safe and secure. They’re also just the thing for keeping all your hard earned Halloween treats away form greedy little brothers and sisters! Or mums and dads for that matter! Enjoy!

Always happy to help,
Mummy Mascot :)

Halloween Games! Horror Top Trumps!

written by Ghost Mascot

As we all know Halloween is a time for ghosts, ghouls and, of course, games. Trick or treating, pumpkin carving, candy hunting, ghost guessing and scarecrow making are all popular pastimes at this time of year. And what great fun they are, if you like that sort of thing! If you’re anything like me however, you prefer your games to be a little bit scarier! Enter these beauties…

Vintage Horror Top Trumps
These, my creepy connoisseurs, are a set of vintage Horror Top Trumps and, for my money, are the definitive Halloween game. With such creepy characters as The Living Skull, Killer Rat, Slime Creature and Lizard Man these corkers are more than a cut above your average Halloween fright fest! Sadly they’re quite hard to come by these days, although that doesn’t mean you have to miss out! Look at these…

Horror Top Trumps
Yes, that’s right, the good folks at Winning Moves have released a brand new set of Horror Top Trumps to terrify a whole new generation of kiddies! And don’t think they’re a watered down version either! The Mad Axeman, Dracula’s Slave, The Swamp Creature and even The Grim Reaper all make an appearance. And if that’s not enough for you, they’ve even got a Halloween set too! So why not head on over and make your Halloween what it should be - SCARY!

Your friendly spectre of spookiness,
Ghost Mascot :)

P.S. As this is supposed to be a kawaii blog the Ed Mascot has asked me to point out that there is also a Littlest Pet Shop Top Trumps set and that it’s really cute and adorable and all that other boring girly stuff! Hee-hee-hee :)

Halloween Gifts at KawaiiPunk!

written by Monster Mascot

Aaaarrrgh! Hello everybody! As a fearsome monster I’m used to doing whatever I want, whenever I want! And joining the KawaiiPunk Mascots isn’t going to change that one bit! After all, there may be no I in team, but there is a me! And as far as I’m concerned that me is me! Well… me and my creepy mascot friends! Tremble in fear and take a look at this…

Halloween gifts at KawaiiPunk
Scared yet? You should be! This is the truly terrifying collection of ghastly goodies available at the KawaiiPunk Zazzle shop. As well as my hideous self, the horrible Zombie, Mummy and Ghost Mascots are all there waiting for you on t-shirts, buttons, keyrings, cards and more! So you best head on over if you know what’s good for you! After all… it’s better that you go out and get us, than we go out and get you!

Mwah ha ha ha haaa,
Monster Mascot :)

P.S. KawaiiPunk products are also available at RedBubble and CafePress, so don’t think hiding’s going to help you either!

Sweet and Scary!

Readers' Art

Dear Sweet Mascot,

I like cute things as much as the next person and have always enjoyed reading your posts. Indeed I consider your eye for adorable goodies to be second to none among the KawaiiPunk Mascots. However, what with Halloween being so close, it seems that you have been somewhat sidelined this month in favour of your less fashionable colleagues - Zombie, Mummy, Ghost etc. I think this is unfair, especially for a kawaii blog! So, in an effort to restore some semblance of cuteness I have created this…

Zombie Sweet Mascot!
It’s a picture of yourself as a hideous crazed zombie! I know, I’m a genius! This way you can be involved in the spooky celebrations that have overtaken this blog while still retaining your elegance and dignity! Pretty cool, isn’t it?

Your fellow follower of fashion,
Vanessa Thompson. Aged 26.

Sweet Mascot replies...

Thank you Vanessa, it’s always nice to feel valued! Although I have to say our definitions of elegance and dignity vary greatly! And I’m not too sure we see eye to eye on cool either!

Thanks again,
Sweet Mascot :)

Riley McD. Monster Madness!

written by Zombie Mascot

Here at KawaiiPunk we always like to bring our readers the cutest t-shirts and gifts. But what with Halloween being so close I have taken it upon myself to add something new to the mix - creepiness! That’s right, today I’m going to introduce you all to a designer that manages to combine cute and creepy in perfect harmony. And also throws in some weirdness along the way…

Riley McD at RedBubble
Riley McD is a designer over at RedBubble that is responsible for creating some of the cutest, creepiest, and strangest looking characters since our very own Ed Mascot reared his very own oddly misshapen head :) Mummies, monsters and robots all feature in Riley’s shop and, as well as t-shirts, he also sells artwork and cards. Just the ticket for a certain upcoming holiday, if you catch my drift!

Keeping it cute, and creepy,
Zombie Mascot :)

Halloween Hullabaloo!

Ask a Mascot

Dear Mummy Mascot,

I was hoping you could help settle a long running family argument. Both my parents and myself are big fans of Halloween and as such always look forward to this time of year. Unfortunately however we can never see eye to eye with regards to who is the best monster/ghoul. Mum swears that ghosts are best, and Dad reckons you can’t beat a zombie. I personally favour the mummy (the creature that is, not my parent!) but, despite our best efforts, we have never been able to resolve this issue conclusively.

I know as a kid I’m supposed to respect and follow the advice of grown ups, but on this occasion I know I am the one who is right! Ghosts can’t touch anything, and zombies are just plain smelly. Ergo mummies are definitely the best monsters! Please help me prove this to my parents so I can have an argument free Halloween!

Yours hopefully,
Jake Saunders.

Mummy Mascot replies...

Ahhh Jake, you are wise beyond your years. Mummies are indeed the greatest monsters, and your parents are indeed fools! Here’s my Top 5 reasons why mummies will always triumph…

1. Practicality! With bandages always at hand mummies never need to worry about cutting themselves when shaving!

2. Resilience! Mummies can happily survive in scorching deserts and frozen ice fields alike. Kinda like a musty Bear Grylls!

3. Stealth! Mummies are experts in the art of camouflage and can blend in anywhere. Museums, hospitals, fancy dress parties, you name it…

4. Cheap transit! With no water content mummies hardly weigh anything. Posting a zombie on the other hand costs a fortune!

5. Allergy free! Mummies are accustomed to dust, so you don’t need to hoover when one’s coming over for dinner!

And if that’s not proof enough for your misguided parents, then show them this. It’s Bobby McFadden and Rod McKuen performing The Mummy with some super cool animation by Dave Hasbrouck…

Bet you never new mummies were great dancers too, huh? Enjoy your argument free Halloween Jake and don’t hesitate for a second if you need help with those pesky parents again, as I’m also really good at curses!

Happy Halloween,
Mummy Mascot :)

Dino Eat Pooter. Tasty!

written by Mischief Mascot

Cupcakes, candy, ice cream and lollipops. There are some foods that just seem to lend themselves to kawaii perfectly. In fact it’s difficult to think of these foods without imagining a happy little face smiling back at you :) But what happens if these foods aren’t to your taste? Can you still ooze culinary cuteness on a treat free diet? Thankfully the answer is yes…

Dino Eat Pooter at Zazzle
The Dino Eat Pooter shop at Zazzle is living proof that a sugar free diet can sometimes be the sweeter option! Here amazingly cute characters can be found tucking in to tasty toasters, computers and monitors, and every one of them is as kawaii as they come! T-shirts, shoes and badges are all on the menu at Dino Eat Pooter, so why not head on over and pick yourself up an unusually tasty treat!

Happy eating,
Mischief Mascot :)

Horoscope Prediction Comes True!

Readers' Emails

Dear Mystic Mascot,

I’ve never been one to put much faith in horoscopes. In fact I’ve always thought they were little more than foolish mumbo jumbo. Of course I am an Aquarian, so I guess I’m naturally sceptical that way! I do however, like many people, enjoy reading them for fun, which is how I came across your monthly horoscope predictions and this…

Aquarius Jan 21 - Feb 19
Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. Congratulations! Looks like a photo of a Smurf is headed your way!
Lucky theorem: Liouville's Theorem and the Construction of Transcendental Numbers

Absolutely bonkers I thought to myself! That will never happen! The next day my closest friend arrived on my doorstep and asked me to look after her most treasured possession while her house was being decorated. Naturally, as any good friend would, I accepted. Delightedly my friend then proceeded to reach into her bag and, lo and behold, produced this…

Photograph of Smurf!
A newly framed photo of a vintage Smurf toy for me to temporarily look after! Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue! I couldn’t believe it! Needless to say I have now taken stock and decided my sceptical attitude to horoscopes is well and truly a thing of the past! Long live foolish mumbo jumbo!

Yours astoundedly,
Martha P Norton

P.S. Haven’t found a use for Liouville's Theorem and the Construction of Transcendental Numbers yet, but I’m sure that will come :)

Mystic Mascot replies...

Thank you Martha for sharing your amazing story. It’s always nice to hear from a fan! Although naturally, I already knew you were going to write :)

Your friendly oracle of oddness,

Happy shopping!

Hugs and kisses,
